In USA Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September to honor and recognize the American labor movement. Beginning in the late 19th century when the trade union and labor movements grew, leaders of trade unions proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. Then "Labor Day" was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor. They organized the first parade in New York City. Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday in the year 1887. In 1894 it became an official federal holiday and thirty states in the United States officially celebrated Labor Day. Labour Day in Canada is also celebrated on the first Monday of September.
More than 80 countries of the world celebrate Labour Day or International Workers' Day on May 1 every year which is the ancient European holiday of May Day. May 1 or May Day was chosen by the Second International of socialist and communist parties to commemorate the Haymarket affair that was occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886.
