World Population Day is an annual event to raise awareness of global population issues. The day is observed on 11 July every year since first observed on 11 July 1990. Observation of World Population Day was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. The Day was inspired by the public interest when the world’s population reached Five Billion on the day July 11, 1987. World Population Day aims to aware general masses of various population issues such as the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, human rights, etc.

World's Population is growing rapidly and had reached 767.35 crores approx. in 2019. To fulfill the demand of the growing population, natural resources are exhausted. In some countries the population is overgrowing. It is very important to take necessary steps to control the growing population to maintain the balance between population and natural resources as well as ecology.

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on fertility was the theme for World Population Day 2021. Population Division of UN DESA in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is organizing an online panel discussion on 14th July to discuss the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on fertility preferences and behaviors including the availability and use of family planning and more.
